Quick Outdoor Bar for your Summer Parties!
Recently I attended a gathering of makers in Atlanta, and one of the hosts for the weekend had a party for the makers at his shop.
He mentioned that he would like to have an outdoor bar to serve drinks from, so jumped in and build a simple quick bar from material on site! ...
The frame is pressure treated 2x4's from the home center, and #2 cedar that Joel had on hand. The Bar is skinned with #2 cedar that Joel had on hand. Finished in clear lacquer.

    Why so much space between the boards?

    • @BillyMcCord
      @BillyMcCord Рік тому

      giving a little space provides a little extra traction for the tires to grip when its wet, but honestly you could push them tight together with like 1/8th inch spacing and it would be fine. I also spray some weed killer in the cracks every spring to keep the grass from and weeds down.

    He didn't show how to calculate and cut the mitre joints! He merely said 'I have a jig for that'. This is not a 'How to'. It's a 'Watch Me'.

      Apologies this is mostly infotainment ... if I remember right the jig I insert into my chop box for this build was 45 degrees meaning it reduced the angle from 90 to 45 in relationship to the blade, this jig allowed the work piece to be supported so that a compound angle could be cut with out moving the head of the saw from zero. I guess I was making an assumption that it was obvious what the jig was accomplishing.

    When screwing decking to joists/stringers, I start at one end and then move to the adjacent joist in order; this works out any possible bows in the deck boards. When you screw both ends first, the outside screws on both ends will not allow the bow (if there is one) to be eliminated.

  • @elkscout1

    those metal floor joists of the shed look to be the same as mine, and they're pretty thin gauge, which gives me the impression you're using lag bolts as sheet metal screws, albeit very large diameter ones. Point being is lag bolts are meant to go into solid material, so I wonder how long before yours start backing out or pull themselves out from the shed from all the flexing of the ramp?

    • @BillyMcCord
      @BillyMcCord 2 роки тому

      You make a good point, the steel in the rim joist is about 1/8th inch, and I wondered about the lags too... but I am happy to say they have pretty much held up after 2-3 years (not sure how long ago I built this ramp) It is a little loose i.e. you can see some flex when I drive in, but its never pulled away, I can't remember if i show this in the video but I supported the high end (next to the shed) of the ramp with some bricks so the weight load was supported the lags are basically keeping the ramp to shed connection.

    I’m building a ramp off a porch which slopes 2.08º (it drops 2” over a span of 96”), but the ramp also is angled from the porch at 7º. I want to cut the supporting joists so that the ends that attaches to the porch are flush with the porch. How do I calculate what the angle of my saw and the tilt of my blade should be? My angles will change from project to project, so I want to learn how to set my saw no matter what the slope or the angle. Can you help?

  • @Steve.Garrison
    @Steve.Garrison 2 роки тому

    I tried this and it worked great! I only made the angled cut with a hacksaw, bent it a little, and sharpened with a file. I used a large flat washer to make it out of. Easy enough to re-sharpen mild steel when needed. The finish is a bit rough, but cleans right up with a little sanding. I was thinking about making one of the table saw dowel jigs, but this is much better in my opinion. New subscriber here. Thanks!

    • @BillyMcCord
      @BillyMcCord 2 роки тому

      I guess I could have showed that part, but I basically took a string put a brick on it to hold it at floor level, then pulled it back far enough that I thought my tractor would not "High Center" it was not a very "scientific" method but it basically worked. I think rule of thumb is that the length of the joist should be 1/3rd longer than the wheel base of the mower or what ever you are driving in. But don't quote me on that because the ground clearance of various tings (mower vs 4 wheeler) would have a huge affect.

I have abut 150 in my yard ready to be delivered back to a depot the rest get burnt and why? Because it is horrible wood, it's full of nail, rocks, staples, and etc and most importantly they are poisonous most having been treated with chemicals as well as good knows what chemicals have been spilled on or around them. So betweén the health hazzard and not waning to wreck my tools I would never be that hardup

      Thank you for watching, I carefully pick my pallets, usually first use, or known use pallets, its cheap wood, and some times very interested grain patterns. Pallet wood projects are not for everyone, but it is usually "Free" just requires a lot of prep labor. As I was learning and building my skills when something was a fail, I had no issue tossing the failure on the burn pile... and starting over.

      Pallet wood has its place, I usually only use "first use pallets" and I know what to look for to find them that have not been used to manage anything that would be a hazard. Using pallet wood is not for every wood worker, and you learn to use cheaper blades etc because yes you will it the occasional nail etc. I use a metal detector to find most of the problems. Glad you liked the video thanks for watching.

    Just asking a couple questions..the wood I have is 100 year old exact 2x10… client wants to have the barn look on the top but have to get it relatively flat on the bottom for legs…anyway any secrets to epoxy on top to give a nice even surface…other than dump it all over and let it settle…am i missing something..and any tips on making a X set of legs with a miter..:

    • @BillyMcCord
      @BillyMcCord 2 роки тому

      So the table.i made is not that even on top and I don't have experience with epoxy pours , in my mind a farmhouse table needs to have character and inconsistency to fit this style. I did plane the bottom to be much more flat that the top and on the top I just filled deep holes and imperfections so that food and what would get stuck and make clean up easier. Hope that helps ...

      My saw has some holes on the back of the fence that allow me to run a screw through the fence into the jig to secure it, the jig is a straight board cut with 45 degree angles, thus reducing the angle from 90 to 45 degrees supporting the work piece sorry I don't make it in here very often to answer comments.
